Ams launches industry's ultra-thin proximity/color sensor module
Share to:

The ultra-thin TMD3702VC module enables mobile phone manufacturers to maximize the ratio between the display area and the body size, while maintaining front proximity, color and ambient light sensing capabilities. Code: AMS) launched a 1.44mm wide fully integrated color/ambient light/proximity sensor module on the 21st. The module adopts an ultra-thin package size and can meet the requirements of the latest narrow-frame mobile phone industrial design. With this module, manufacturers can better optimize the functions of the smartphone's touch screen, including automatic disabling during a call and adjusting the screen brightness according to environmental conditions, which can make the smartphone more comfortable to use and consume less energy. Ams’ newly launched TMD3702VC three-in-one integrated module is packaged in a 1.44mm x 2.84mm x 0.65mm package. Smartphone manufacturers can use it to replace the wider modules before, implement a narrow bezel design, increase the ratio between the display area and the body size, while maintaining important infrared proximity and light sensing functions. The module integrates an IR transmitter, an IR detector, four color sensing channels and multiple filters. With the new precision optical packaging and design technology specially developed by ams semiconductor, TMD3702VC can show first-class performance. The proximity sensor uses a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) class 1 human eye-safe 940nm emitter, which has higher optical efficiency than the LED emitter used in similar devices. Therefore, the average power consumption of 1.8V TMD3702VC in active mode can be kept at a very low level. In sleep mode, the device consumes only 0.7µA. TMD3702VC is packaged in a new semi-transparent compound mold to provide an ultra-wide field of view of ±48°. The proximity engine has a wide dynamic range, supports ambient light reduction and advanced optical crosstalk noise cancellation technology, can dynamically eliminate electronic and optical crosstalk, and achieve reliable proximity detection. The TMD3702VC device uses an advanced optical sensor architecture to provide strong support for accurately measuring the correlated color temperature (CCT) of ambient light. The ambient light and color sensing functions include four parallel ambient light sensing channels (red, green, blue and transparent), all equipped with a UV/IR shading filter. Sensitivity, power consumption and noise have been optimized, and the timing and power are adjustable. This module can accurately measure the ambient light, and provide the calculation of illuminance and color temperature, thus supporting the smart phone to realize the appearance management of the display screen. Dave Moon, senior product marketing manager of ams, said: "A major trend facing smartphone industrial design today is to increase the screen-to-body ratio and maximize the display size, while minimizing the bezel area requires the use of the smallest module. Solution. The ultra-small form factor of TMD3702VC helps to meet this demand, making the display frame almost disappear. The solution provided by TMD3702 for mobile phone designers is more than 60% smaller than the previous generation product, which can help them allocate to the front environment Minimize the space for light and proximity sensing."
